In recent years, the progress of global urbanization has accelerated rapidly. The ensuing urban-rural gap has caused more people to flock to the cities. A metropolis like Taipei, the city I am studying and living in, offers fast and convenient life with ample job opportunities, more than average income, and quicker acceleration of social status. However, underneath this prosperity, there are fewer similarities and personal connections between people. Urban dwellers have limited physical social opportunities with an occupied urban life, which brings a strong sense of alienation.

Everyone is like a lonely island, lacking sincere communication, causing negative effects on the body and mind. According to my academic research and user interview, people experiencing urban loneliness have the following characteristics: lack of security and no sense of belonging and difficulty connecting to close friends whom they can meet physically.

Embrace Loneliness is an interactive art installation aiming to serve the needs of people with urban loneliness caused by chronic stress in metropolitan cities, helping these groups to ease and accept their negative emotions brought about by feelings of urban loneliness, and find their true self from within.

Inspiration

Abandoned Phone Booth in Taiwan
With the popularization of mobile phones and the Internet, the number of telephone booths in Taiwan has continued to decrease. However, in order to provide services and convenience to the people, there are still 60,000 public telephones booths in Taiwan, providing people with emergency calls or use by people in need.

What is Loneliness ?
The pain and discomfort caused by feeling like living alone.

What is City Loneliness ?
Refers to the loneliness caused by modern city life, including the state of living alone - ISOLATION , and the psychological LONELINESS . The typical characteristics are self-closed, lonely, and unwilling to communicate with others.

The most absurd thing about the city is that it is surrounded by crowds all the time, but people often feel lonely in it.

Design Direction

Design Goal
It is not a terrible thing to be alone, on the contrary, an excellent opportunity to grow.

We can talk to ourselves and grasp this unique opportunity to understand ourselves. People can boldly and relaxedly speak the deepest voices in their hearts in this independent space by listening toand clarifying their true selves.

Why this project uses the telephone booth to be the medium?
The phone booth, imaged in the transmission of information, a prop for communication, provides lonely people in the busy city with a quiet and independent space for self-talk.
Inspiration from Tarot Cards
The graphic is represented by the change of  light spots, symbolizing the hope in the heart.

Meaning
The years and time alternate, and the fear is only a moment; hence, no fear really exists.

After suffering, you still have yourself and hope. When you are in peace, you can see the faint starlight in your heart. It allows you to see hope and guide you to the right path.

The Starlight spots, symbolizing the hope in the heart.

The star card brings tranquility and peace. Every night, when you look up at the starry sky, you can feel Nut's wishes. Every star is a soul, helping you see hope.
